  4.     The lean and mean of haute couture were poised to think -- and
  5. say -- the worst about Gianfranco Ferre. After all, the Italian
  6. had replaced the redoubtable Marc Bohan at the House of Dior when
  7. the latter got the boot in May. Last week, as Ferre showed his
  8. first collection, fashion's arbiters met to pass judgment on his
  9. bows and furbelows. Sweltering inside a Parisian garden tent, U.S.
  10. buyers were warm in their admiration for his ball gowns. Though he
  11. picked up the Golden Thimble for his sumptuous duds, most locals
  12. gave the interloper's designs a cool shoulder. Their verdict: not
  13. French enough. Quelle surprise!
