- The lean and mean of haute couture were poised to think -- and
- say -- the worst about Gianfranco Ferre. After all, the Italian
- had replaced the redoubtable Marc Bohan at the House of Dior when
- the latter got the boot in May. Last week, as Ferre showed his
- first collection, fashion's arbiters met to pass judgment on his
- bows and furbelows. Sweltering inside a Parisian garden tent, U.S.
- buyers were warm in their admiration for his ball gowns. Though he
- picked up the Golden Thimble for his sumptuous duds, most locals
- gave the interloper's designs a cool shoulder. Their verdict: not
- French enough. Quelle surprise!
